Junior High Girls vs. Somerset Academy Miramar - January 23, 2017

The Junior High Girls began the game with their minds set on beating Somerset Academy Miramar. The girls played to the best of their abilities to score as many points as possible, and to defeat the other team. For example, Annie Torres scored three points soon after she was called into the game. Even though they played their best, they still weren't able to take the lead just yet.

As the game went on, the girls were still struggling to keep up with the other team. Eventually, when players like Kennedy Jennings and Cyerah Parham scored points, they were able to overtake their opponents. Near the end of the game, the Somerset team began to score more, and both teams were tied. Then, the girls scored more points to gain the lead, but became tied again. As the game was closing out, Treciyah Mitchell and Victoria Footman knocked the ball away from the other team to keep them from scoring. Unfortunately, the Somerset team took the lead back, and ended the game with the score 21-25. Even though they didn't win the game, the Junior High Girls came close and were almost tied. The next game is on January 23, 2017 at 4:30pm. The Junior High Boys will be playing a home game against Somerset Academy Pembroke Pines.

These classes will equip our parents with plenty of great information on topics like Why We Exist, How We Govern, How We Teach, and How Parents Can Help.  In addition, parents who complete the course are eligible to receive certain benefits specified in the attached brochure.

Classes run for 5 consecutive Thursdays: August 24, August 31, September 7, September 14, and September 21 from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Be sure to sign up today as space is limited! Solar Eclipse

solar eclipse

Dear NCA Family,

As you are aware, on Monday, August 21st, between 1-4pm, we have an opportunity to witness one of those once-in-a-lifetime events—a solar eclipse. The last total solar eclipse over North America occurred before most of us were born. This opportunity is one of those great learning experiences for the budding scientists in our school. Science is most inspiring when we are able to experience first-hand so many of the natural phenomena we read about.

What makes this event most unique is that it involves looking at the sun for long stretches of time. This is normally a dangerous thing to do, something that can do serious long-term damage to the eye. Those who have the appropriate protective eyewear will be able to experience the event for all that it has to offer. Those who don’t will have to remain indoors or else risk doing serious harm to their eyes.

So, how is Northwest preparing for the Solar Eclipse?

First and foremost, we recognize the safety concerns associated with the event as this is our top priority at Northwest. Therefore, we strongly recommend that each parent speak with their child, in details, regarding those concerns. Here is a link to the NASA website with full details of the eclipse and how best to prepare for it:

https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/eclipse-who-what-where-when-and-how

  1. School Will be Open on Monday.
  2. Families may pick their kids up prior to the eclipse, preferably before 12:30pm, and those students will be excused for the day.
  3. Families who choose to keep their kids at home will receive an excused absence from school. Therefore, all work missed can be made up without penalty.
  4. If your wish your child to view the eclipse, written permission must be issued to your child’s teacher in the form of an email before 12:30pm on Monday. Additionally, your child must have the appropriate eyewear with the rating ISO - 12312-2. Regular or high-end sunglasses are NOT appropriate.
  5. Another alternative to viewing the eclipse is a Pinhole Projector: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2017/08/19/cant-find-the-protective-glasses-to-watch-the-solar-eclipse-go-old-school/?utm_term=.70bd9aaf0d2b  Note: While this is a legitimate option, Northwest will not permit students to use this method to view the event because of the temptation to expose the eyes to the sun without appropriate protection.
  6. Those students who have received permission from their parents to watch the event will be escorted to a designated location between the times of 2:15 and 2:30pm. Totality is expected to occur sometime around 2:45pm.
  7. Since the event is set to end around 4pm, we will not be releasing students at the regularly scheduled time of 3pm. If parents choose to pick up their child during the event, they do so at their own risk. We strongly discourage picking up your child during the event. This includes all grade levels.
  8. High school students who drive will not be released until the event is complete. If there is a concern regarding release time, it is advised that the child not come to school that day.
  9. The Academy strongly recommends that all families keep their children at home and directly supervise the viewing of the event. This is largely due to the legitimate safety concerns that have been raised. However, we recognize that not all families will be able to take this day off to enjoy the event together and therefore we want to accommodate this need.

 Some additional notes:

  • All outdoor activities will be cancelled between 1-4pm.
  • For those students who do not receive permission to view the event, we will be designating locations where the students will remain during the event, where they will have access to restrooms without having to go outdoors.
  • The lunch schedules will be adjusted so that the students will be completely indoors by 1pm. This particularly affects middle school. If your child is accustomed to having lunch delivered during the day, it is recommended that they pack a lunch for Monday.

Junior Varsity Boys vs. SLAM Academy - January 23, 2017

The lead for the game began to slip away from the Junior Varsity Boys as time went on. The SLAM Academy team was quickly scoring shot after shot, and were soon ahead of the JV boys. No matter how hard the boys tried, they couldn't quite catch up to the SLAM team. Every time the boys scored, the other team would retaliate by scoring several more times. However, the boys' defense was pretty effective for the most part. Oliver Henry was constantly moving to block the view of his adversary, and Joshua Wilson bumped into the other team to mess up their shot. Keeping up their defense allowed the other team to not score as much. So, when they got the ball and scored, they were slowly catching up to the SLAM team.

During the second half of the game, the boys continued to use their defense against the other team. However, the SLAM team began to work past it, and they scored more and more. With time slowly running out, the JV boys tried to score as many points as they could before the buzzer sounded. When Jerry Mery shot the ball, it went just over the hoop and missed. Isaac Torres responded by catching the ball and pushing it into the hoop. Even though the team played well, it wasn't enough to take the lead, and they lost with a score of 45-63. The next game is on January 23, 2017. The Varsity Boys will be playing a home game against SLAM Academy at 7:00pm.

Varsity Girls vs. Boca Raton Christian School - January 24, 2017

The game began with a slow start, since both the Varsity Girls and Boca Raton Christian School had a hard time scoring points. Both teams seemed to have been equally matched, and it was a while before one gained the upper hand on the other. However, once the girls took a brief time out, they quickly made points and surpassed the Boca Raton team. Zoe Rivas and Stephanie Precieu were continuously shooting the ball into the hoop, which lead their team to rise to the top. Once they had the lead, the girls made sure that the Boca Raton team wouldn't take it away from them. Tania Therlonge and Brianna Augustin had a good defense so that the opposing team would score as little points as possible. As the Boca Raton team was getting closer and closer to taking the lead, the Varsity Girls tightened their grip on it. When the opposing team was pressuring the girls to throw the ball, they took their time so that they wouldn't get distracted.

Near the end of the game, the Varsity Girls were still holding on tightly to the lead. With victory so close, they were going to keep playing until the buzzer sounded. Even though they already had the lead, they were determined to win with as many points as possible. Catherine Dorcinvil scored the ball in at the last second, which lead to the Varsity Girls winning the game with 45-24. This just goes to show that slow and steady wins the race (and game). The next game is on January 24, 2017. The Junior Varsity Boys will be playing a home game against Boca Raton Christian Schoool at 5:30pm.

Hurricane Irma

hurricane irma

Dear NCA Family,

As you are aware, by all projections, we are in the path of Hurricane Irma. Because safety is our top priority, we want to make sure you and your family have as much time as possible to prepare for this potentially devastating storm. Therefore, we will be closing school for ELC - 12th grade on Thursday and Friday of this week. This will give the staff of NCA time to prepare the facility in order to minimize the damage. We are also asking that all children in After Care, Study Hall, or in the ELC tomorrow, September 6th, be picked up by 4 pm. We believe this will give all constituents of Northwest Christian Academy ample time to prepare their families for impact.

We will keep you posted as to when school will resume. However, the most current and up-to-date information can be found at www.nweagles.org. If school is closed, it will state it on the school webpage first, followed by email and, lastly, text message.

We understand that this school closure may inconvenience many of you. However, it is always our policy to err on the side of caution. We appreciate your cooperation in allowing our staff to have time to prepare their homes for the storm.

Please be safe!

Note: ALL afternoon/evening activites are CANCELLED for the remainder of this week. This includes practices, athletic events, Musical Theater, Parent Academy class, and Wednesday Night Bible study.

Hurricane Irma - Update

Hurricane Irma

Dear NCA Family,

School will be closed Monday and Tuesday, September 11th and 12th. Once damage is assessed and power is restored, we will update everyone on the status for the rest of the week.

Continue to stay safe and indoors!

After a Hurricane Tips:

  • Listen to local officials for updates and instructions.
  • Check-in with family and friends by texting or using social media.
  • Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe.
  • Watch out for debris and downed power lines.
  • Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of fast-moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
  • Avoid flood water as it may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines and may hide dangerous debris or places where the ground is washed away.
  • Photograph the damage to your property in order to assist in filing an insurance claim.
  • Do what you can to prevent further damage to your property, (e.g., putting a tarp on a damaged roof), as insurance may not cover additional damage that occurs after the storm.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Students are expected to be in attendance every day. Students absent in excess of 20 days may not receive credit for the school year or may be required to attend summer school. Exceptions to these circumstances may be made by the administration.

Tardiness
A student is tardy to school if they are not in homeroom by 8:00 a.m. When tardy, students must report to the school office to be signed in. The following outlines the tardy policy for each department. Elementary An unexcused tardy occurs when parents fail to sign in their student in the school office when arriving after 8:00 a.m. Three unexcused tardies equal one absence. Secondary Middle and high school students who are tardy to school will be issued demerits. Three tardy occurrences will result in a Saturday detention and a detention will be charged to the student’s account. Three unexcused tardies equal one absence. Arriving tardy to a class, without a pass, is unacceptable. Teachers will issue demerits for tardiness.

Excused Absence
When excused absences occur, it is requested that parents call (305) 685-8734 by 8:30 a.m. or as soon as possible to let the school know the reason for the student’s absence. All parents are requested to send a note with their child explaining the reason for the absence. The following are considered excused absences: • Illness • Death in the immediate family • Medical appointment Class work missed during an excused absence must be made up. The student must initiate arrangements to make up work. A student who has missed school because of an excused absence will have the number of school days missed plus one to make up his or her work.

Unexcused Absence
An absence not condoned by the school may result in a zero for assignments that were missed. The following are considered unexcused absences:

• No call or note is received from the parent
• Truancy (defined by the State as an absence not reported)
• Suspension Excuse from Class Students will only be permitted to leave a class in the case of an emergency.

Note: If a student becomes ill during the school day, the student must report to the school office. Approval must be obtained from a parent or legal guardian before the student is released.

Dear NCA Family,

I pray that all of you are safe and have escaped this massive storm without any bodily harm. Those of you who have sustained damage to personal property, please let us know so that we may better understand your situation, particularly how it may affect your child’s education moving forward. Additionally, we would like to help direct whatever resources we have available to assisting you in the recovery process.

I was able to do a brief survey of the school property early yesterday morning and, at first glance, there is no major structural damage to the building. We have several trees down in the parking lot and over the playground area. In addition, there is some minor water damage in three of the classrooms that were surveyed. We are still without power, however, we have notified FPL through their normal channels of our status. Our maintenance staff is on site today conducting a more thorough inspection of the property to pinpoint any additional areas of concern.

As you know, our goal is first and foremost the safety of all our constituents (students, teachers, and parents) and anyone who comes on site. Therefore, we want to give our maintenance and custodial staff ample time to prepare the facility to resume normal operations. In addition, we want to give our teachers time to adjust their lesson plans accordingly and reorient their classrooms to be ready to teach the students once school resumes.

Therefore, we have determined, with all factors considered, that School Will Resume on Monday, September 18, 2017.

We will do our best to keep you updated on the status of the facility and how you can best prepare your child for their return to school next week.

Sincerely,

J. Nelson

Those who don’t know about our Parent Association for Student Success (PASS) program, please take a moment to read this article…

The PASS program was designed to assist parents in the process of fulfilling their God-given responsibility of training and educating their children to equip them for every good work and for the advancement of the kingdom of God. Since we launched the program in 2013, we have had approximately 75 families complete and graduate the PASS program. Not only do these families have access to amazing benefits to include half off and in some cases free registration for each child for the duration of their attendance at NCA, but they also have the opportunity to build a bridge between parents and administration.

The PASS program works as a partnership between the school and home to help provide the best resources for the students to encourage their success and progression in the world as a Christian communicator, thinker and servant-leader. The PASS program gives the school administration as well as the parents, at home, the opportunity to lead by example and show the students first-hand what exactly it is to work in tandem. For the 2016-2017 school year, our PASS parents collectively completed a total of 1,701 hours volunteering for various school-related events and activities and donated a total of $5,423.27 in school related goods and equipment for the classrooms, athletic programs and campus events!

Ms. Tiwanda Mobley joined PASS in 2015. Since then she has unwaveringly shown her support for NCA. She has attended some of our Continuing Educations classes with the Five Points of Christian Education series; donated over $500 last year to sporting equipment and supplies for our student athletes and was recognized as our top monetary contributor for the 2016-2017 school year! Additionally, she was the second runner up for Parent of the Year for the 2016-2017 school year. We are also pleased to announce and recognize Ms. Mobley as being the first parent to not only complete, but EXCEED her required volunteer service hours for the 2017-2018 school year as of August 20, 2017- that’s right, only two weeks into the new school year!!! From the bottom of our hearts, the NCA administration would like to take the time to publicly thank you for all that you have done, are doing and continue to do in support of our mission and vision.
